GnomeDex 2004

rjsNetworks.com wanted to sponsor GnomeDex 2003, but lack of time just made it impossible. Hopefully this year, we will be able to sponsor GnomeDex 2004, if the event is being held...

Google's Architecture

We normally give easy tips and tutorials relative to web development and general computing. However, many readers have requested that we get a bit more technical with the blog...so here it goes. If you have the stomach, grab a pen and paper and draw out the architecture of Google's fault tolerant filesystem...

By the way, the PDF looks intimidating but fill your mind and extend your knowledge...happy diagramming...

SPAM Ban - UK tightens control

Finally a country that has made the independent decision to ban SPAM. The United Kingdom has announced that sending unsolicited e-mails is now a criminal offense.

"From Thursday, senders of unwanted e-mails face fines under EU Privacy and Electronic Communications regulations unless the recipient has agreed in advance to accept the messages. " CNN

The law does allow email to be sent with an opt-out clause....EH? The spam that we all recieve has an opt-out clause, which in-turn gives the spammer the confirmation that your email account does exist; subscribing you to additional external spam lists. A step in the correct direction for the English, but loop holes in the system will make the new law almost insignificant. Our 2 pence.

A VS.Net Alternative

Many customers have been looking for an alternative to the expensive VS.NET 2003 IDE from Microsoft recently. As an alternative to ASP.NET, ASP Matrix provides a well defined and usable IDE. However, if you are looking for an environment with almost every feature, but can't stand paying the $'s for Microsoft's version, Borland comes to the rescue.

C#Builder has a free download of their Personal Edition IDE specifically for .NET. Now, all we need is one for VB.NET, but that should not be an issue since every VB.NET programmer can read/interpret C# code. We especially like the visual modeler tools intergrated into the product, CORBRA and J2EE technologies; but these features are available in the Professional, Enterprise, and Architect versions of the product.

Enjoy!
